A glass with nucleation sites will release a stream of carbonation bubbles up to the head of foam. Nucleation sites are small cavities or textures on glassware walls that reduce the energy needed for beer gases to release. Due to wetting, beer is less able to occupy the nucleation sites, which makes it easier for bubbles to form. They temporarily sneak in and then stream up to the foamy head. The nucleation sites help improve head creation and head retention.
Beer glasses without nucleation sites can use Beer Stones to get the same effect.
